Nintendo has finally announced its successor to the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch 2.
Nintendo showed off the functionality of the next-gen console in rather vague terms, with a tease of more information to come via a Nintendo Direct dated April 2.
At this time Nintendo did not announce a Switch 2 release date, but did say the console will be available in 2025. Nintendo also failed to announce an official price. There are several details we still don’t know yet, such as software launch line-up even though the video showed a new Mario Kart.
Talk of Nintendo’s new system has gone on for years, growing stronger lately as info about its shape and even its parts leaked from makers of add-ons. This news backs up much of what the leaks said, like the system being a bit bigger than the Switch, having Joy-Con that stick on with magnets, and letting Joy-Con work like a mouse.
Last year, Nintendo told us the Switch 2 works with old games. The video shows it can play both game cards and digital games from the first Switch, plus new Switch 2 games. But some old Switch games might not work or might not work fully on the Switch 2.
Nintendo will also hold Nintendo Switch 2 Experience events, where consumers can go hands-on with Nintendo Switch 2 in cities around the world. A Nintendo Account is necessary to participate.
