Sony has announced that physical game discs are on the way out. Beginning in January 2028, all new games released on PlayStation consoles will be sold digitally only, marking the end of physical disc production for new PlayStation releases.
The announcement comes just days after Rockstar confirmed that GTA 6 won’t have a traditional disc release, with the “physical” version instead containing a download code in the box. At the time, many assumed it was Rockstar making a bold call—but Sony’s latest announcement suggests the industry was already heading in that direction.
In a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony said the move reflects changing consumer habits.
“In response to shifting trends in consumer preference, new games will be released on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only.”
The company added that physical discs for games released before January 2028 won’t be affected, but every new PlayStation title after the cutoff—regardless of publisher—will launch without a disc version.
Sony says the decision is driven by the growing popularity of digital purchases, arguing that most players now choose to buy and download their games rather than pick up a physical copy.
Not everyone is convinced.
Games industry analyst Piers Harding-Rolls described the announcement as “a watershed moment for the industry,” pointing to data showing that digital purchases have gone from just 13% of PlayStation game sales in 2013 to almost 80% in 2025. While he said the move was inevitable, he acknowledged that many players will be concerned about game preservation, collecting physical copies, and long-term ownership.
Those concerns have only grown after Sony recently confirmed it will remove more than 550 digital movies from users’ PlayStation accounts in certain regions because of licensing agreements without offering refunds or replacement access. The decision reignited the debate over whether players truly own digital purchases.
As longtime supporters of physical media, we’re disappointed by the decision. While digital downloads offer convenience, we believe players should still have the choice to own their games on disc. Moving to an all-digital future raises legitimate concerns around ownership, preservation, and what happens when digital licenses or storefronts eventually disappear.
Sony’s decision also puts Rockstar’s GTA 6 strategy into context. Rather than being an isolated choice, the lack of a disc version now looks like an early sign of where the PlayStation ecosystem was heading. By January 2028, every new PlayStation game will follow the same digital-only model.
Some industry analysts also believe the timing could hint at Sony’s plans for the next generation of hardware, with speculation already growing that the transition may coincide with the launch window for the PlayStation 6.
