The voice behind one of entertainment’s most recognizable heroes has fallen silent. Peter Cullen, best known as the longtime voice of Optimus Prime across Transformers television, film, and video games, has died at the age of 85.
Cullen died Wednesday, August 26, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles. His agent confirmed his death on Thursday. According to a statement from his family, Cullen passed peacefully surrounded by family. A cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.
For generations of Transformers fans, Cullen was more than an actor behind a microphone. His unmistakable voice became inseparable from Optimus Prime and helped define what the Autobot leader represented: courage, compassion, strength, sacrifice, and leadership.
The Voice of Optimus Prime
Cullen first voiced Optimus Prime when the original Transformers animated series debuted in 1984. He would continue returning to the role for more than four decades, including the original animated series, 1986’s The Transformers: The Movie, later television productions, the live-action Transformers films, and numerous video games.
The inspiration behind the voice became almost as legendary as Optimus himself.
Before Cullen auditioned for the character, he spoke with his older brother Larry, a U.S. Marine who had served in Vietnam. His brother encouraged him not to portray a stereotypical loud or boastful hero, but instead someone compassionate, restrained, and powerful when necessary.
That advice helped Cullen shape Optimus Prime around a simple principle:
“Be strong enough to be gentle.”
It became a philosophy Cullen carried with the character throughout his career and one that generations of Transformers fans came to associate with Optimus Prime himself.
Optimus Prime in Video Games
While millions first heard Cullen through television or film, video games gave players something different: the opportunity to fight alongside Optimus Prime, and sometimes become Optimus Prime themselves.
Cullen reprised the role for a number of Transformers games over the years, including:
- Transformers: The Game (2007)
- Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
- Transformers: War for Cybertron (2010)
- Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)
- Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (2012)
- Transformers Prime: The Game (2012)
- Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark (2014)
- Transformers: Devastation (2015)
His video game work appeared across systems including PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Nintendo Wii, Wii U, Nintendo DS, PC, and others.
When Activision developed Transformers: The Game alongside the 2007 live-action movie, bringing Cullen back was considered important enough that the publisher specifically announced the return of both Cullen as Optimus Prime and Frank Welker as Megatron.
That connection continued into some of the most fondly remembered Transformers games.
High Moon Studios’ Transformers: War for Cybertron put Cullen’s Optimus at the center of the conflict on Cybertron in 2010. He returned two years later for Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, again portraying Optimus as players experienced the final days of the Transformers’ homeworld.
In 2015, Cullen returned once again in PlatinumGames’ Transformers: Devastation. The game deliberately embraced the appearance and atmosphere of the original Generation 1 era, with Cullen providing the familiar voice of Optimus alongside several other returning Transformers voice actors.
For players who grew up hearing that voice through a controller rather than a television set, these games became another important part of Cullen’s legacy.
Far More Than Optimus Prime
Although Optimus Prime became his defining role, Peter Cullen’s career stretched across hundreds of television, film, animation, and video game credits.
Another generation knew him as the soft-spoken and perpetually gloomy Eeyore from Disney’s Winnie the Pooh. He also portrayed characters and creatures across productions including Knight Rider, G.I. Joe, Voltron, The Smurfs, King Kong, and even provided vocal effects for the Predator in the original 1987 film.
His work earned Cullen a Daytime Emmy nomination for Transformers: Prime, and in 2023 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Children’s & Family Emmy Awards in recognition of his extraordinary career.
A Voice That Became a Hero
There are actors who play memorable characters, and then there are performers whose work becomes so closely connected to a character that separating the two becomes almost impossible.
For Transformers, Peter Cullen was that voice.
Children who first watched Optimus Prime on Saturday morning television grew into adults who heard him again in movie theaters. Another generation discovered him through games like War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron. Younger fans encountered the same familiar voice through newer films, television series, games, toys, and decades of Transformers history.
The technology changed. The animation changed. The consoles changed.
Optimus Prime still sounded like Optimus Prime.
Cullen’s family has asked fans wishing to honor his memory to carry forward the qualities he represented through service to their communities and by leading others with compassion, integrity, and loyalty. They also repeated the words that helped inspire his most famous character all those years ago: “be strong enough to be gentle.”
Peter Cullen is survived by his four children, Angus, Claire, Pilar, and Clay.
For more than 40 years, when Optimus Prime called upon the Autobots to roll out, Peter Cullen was the voice leading the way.
His voice will continue to live on through the movies, television shows, games, and memories he leaves behind.
